Let me start by introducing my self. My name is Karen DeMasters. My first love is Jesus. My second love is theater. I find that theater is an incredible communication tool that can change hearts and minds. That is what I am about. I travelled for 20 years as part of a drama team that performed in churches spreading the gospel from 1985 - 2005. We also performed in school doing plays about substance abuse and family communication. I have also ran church drama groups. I currently write, direct and act doing plays on social justice in a secular setting.
While theater has great entertainment value, it always brings across a message. Right now, for instance, for the most part Hollywood's message is that, whether male or female, the most important thing is to have a partner to love and love is all about having sex. I am not sure it is a message our culture needs to hear, but it is the prevalent message from Hollywood movies.
Because of my background, I have written a number of plays for and about my faith, however, my current message deals more with our society's attitude toward money. I also bring politics into the spectrum. I can and will be writing other pieces on other subjects, as time goes on, but right now that is where my emphasis lies.
This blog will always be about theater. Sometimes it will deal with acting basics, other times it will deal with directing, and occasionally it will deal with writing. I will stay out of politics on this page, although it will remain prevalent in the plays I write.
By the way, if you live in or around Seattle, or if you are there during these times, come see my shows. I am directing a play as part of a short act festival March 10 8:30 PM and March 11 7 PM at the Pocket Theater. Tickets can be obtained at http://thepocket.org .
Hope to see you there,
